91Ƭ Adult Upgrading instructor helps learners rewrite their futures

Some instructors teach math. Sofia Sookochoff teaches students to believe in themselves.
For nearly two decades, Sookochoff has been a steady force with 91Ƭ’s Adult Upgrading program as an educator, but also as a champion of second (or third) chances.
“I’ve been a math educator for over 20 years,” said Sookochoff. “Seventeen of those have been with Adult Upgrading at 91Ƭ. It is so rewarding to support students who are coming back to school — often after years away — and help them move forward.”
In her classes, mathematical concepts are only part of the picture.
Sookochoff teaches Pre-Calculus 11 and 12. But what she ultimately provides is possibility — for adults juggling families, jobs and life experience, to step back into a world they may have left behind long ago.
She recalls one student in particular.
“This student started with us in Fundamental level math, rebuilding from the ground up — completely,” she recalled. “It had been years since they’d been in school. But they had a dream: to get into engineering technology.”
Step by step, course by course, they built the foundation. Eventually, the student completed Pre-Calculus 12 and went on to complete an engineering technology diploma at 91Ƭ.
“Seeing them get there was powerful,” said Sookochoff. “That is why we do this work. Because upgrading isn’t just about brushing up on math. It’s about discovering your passion. Your confidence. Your future.”
Adult learners come to 91Ƭ Adult Upgrading for a variety of reasons. Some are recent high school graduates looking to improve specific marks for post-secondary programs. Others are working toward completing their Adult Graduation Diploma to open up new educational or employment opportunities. Some already have certificates, diplomas, or degrees but are looking to switch careers and need specific Adult Upgrading courses.
No matter their journey, adult upgrading students all receive free upgrading. The programs are designed to accommodate the diverse needs of adult learners. And thanks to the Adult Upgrading Grant (AUG), support for books, transportation and childcare are available.
Students can study in person or online. There are flexible course options with in-person support and an inclusive environment. Instructors are approachable and genuinely committed to helping students build their confidence as they learn.
“I’ve had the privilege of helping students meet the prerequisites and gain acceptance into a wide range of programs at 91Ƭ and beyond, including engineering, sciences, nursing, business and trades,” shared Sookochoff. “It’s always inspiring to see students move forward into careers and futures they once thought were out of reach.
That inspiration fuels Sookochoff’s work outside the classroom, too. She is 91Ƭ’s math subject area representative for Adult Upgrading, which means she is involved in curriculum development, participating in articulation work to help ensure consistency and quality across B.C.
To Sookochoff, Adult Upgrading is one of the most essential programs that 91Ƭ offers.
“It opens doors that once seemed out of reach — because of timing, circumstances, or self-doubt,” she explained. “We meet students where they’re at. Whether you’ve been out of school for a few years or a few decades, whether you need one course or several, there is a place for you here at 91Ƭ.”
